Heh, exactly. That's why "47 and a Half Ronin" ... he wasn't one of the ronin, but he was their indispensable ally (because the script-writers said so). Like a ronin-in-law, or a step-ronin.

It might've been more fun if they cast him as 1/5 of an 80% Japanese ensemble cast, in the "Anti-Heroic Lancer" 5-part-band role. He could've been all edgy with his half-gaijiness and question the leader and the bushido and whatever when the plot called for it, and suck in the segment of the western audience that would not see the movie without him without swallowing half of the camera time.
